Chilton Memorial Hospital's Parent Education Department offer many seminars and courses where parents have the opportunity to gain knowledge and insight about all aspects of parenting, from the early months of pregnancy through the child's pre-school years.

Lamaze Childbirth Preparation
Childbirth
This popular and informative course includes all aspects of childbirth. Expectant mothers and their support partners will learn about the stages of labor and birth, the partner's role, coping techniques including Lamaze breathing patterns, relaxation methods, common diagnostic tests, variations of labor such as induction, medical options, medications, epidural anesthesia, Caesarean birth, the postpartum period, and transition to parenting. Registered nurses with certification in childbirth education present a practical and flexible approach to labor. Videos and a tour of Chilton Memorial's Family Birth Center complete the preparation for childbirth. Early registration is recommended.
Refresher Lamaze Childbirth Preparation
This private one session class is specifically designed to meet the needs of the mother and her support partner who have each completed a Lamaze Childbirth Preparation class within 5 years. Topics include a review of relaxation, Lamaze breathing patterns and managing variations of labor such as induction and back labor, Cesarean birth, medications and epidural anesthesia. Breast-feeding
Expectant mothers receive complete, current information on all aspects of breast-feeding in this special class just for them. Advantages to breast-feeding, pre-natal preparation, proper positioning, overcoming difficulties, determining if a baby is receiving sufficient milk, pumping and storage of breast milk, and returning to work while nursing will be discussed by a registered nurse certified as a lactation specialist. Infant Care
Since new babies don't come with instruction books, the Infant Care class is the next best thing. Educational components include how to bathe a baby, caring for the cord and circumcision, recognizing normal variations in the newborn, taking a baby's temperature, diapering, burping, wrapping and holding an infant, and formula feeding. Grandparents and other caregivers are also welcome to register.
The Happiest Baby on the Block
Expectant Parents will learn step by step how to help babies sleep longer and how to soothe even the fussiest of babies.
Evening With a Pediatrician
In this informative program, a Chilton Memorial Hospital pediatrician will discuss parents' concerns and some of the issues that should be decided before the baby's birth. Topics include the hospital stay, newborn jaundice, changes to expect in the early weeks, immunizations, common health concerns, allergies, crying, signs of illness, and safety. This class gives expectant parents an excellent opportunity to ask questions and receive current, professional information.
Prenatal Yoga
This class is designed to help strengthen core muscles and increase flexibility while relaxing other areas such as the lower back pain. This class can improve your physical comfort preparing for birth.
Mommy and Me Yoga
This is an 8 week session, for Moms and Babies to attend together! Your child is welcome from birth to six months.
Parenting: The New Horizon
A five - week education & support group for parents with newborns. Topics to be discussed: Time management, Hormonal Changes, Postpartum depression & Communication with Family.
Just for Dads
A one session class to help to enhance and thrive at being a dad. This class will discuss the importance of having a father/child bond during the early years in a child's life. Learn why it is so important for dad to have a role in raising their children and the benefits of this.
Sibling Preparation: New Additions
Within a framework of warmth and acceptance, New Additions helps ease older brothers and sisters into a new phase in their lives. The class, for children ages 3 through 9, includes story-time, a trip to the Nursery, sharing ideas and feelings about babies, viewing a video, and safety information. Because baby care is an adult activity, none is presented in this class. The focus throughout the program is to re-enforce the child's positive feelings about his/her uniqueness and importance in the family. Two adults may accompany the child.
Baby's Siblings at Birth
With the approval of the mother's obstetrician, this unique class prepares a big brother/sister to be present at his/her sibling's birth. In addition to the mother's support partner, plan to have an adult present in the hospital during labor to act as a support person for the child/children if necessary. A child's participation is based on age and maturity.
Grandparents Class
Old Methods! New Methods! There have been so many changes since your own babies were born. This class will inform new and seasoned grandparents of the current trends and help to develop a better understanding between grandparents and new parents. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss your concerns and the new ideas in child-care.
Loving without Spoiling: Tips for Raising Terrific Kids
Best selling author of four books including, "Loving without Spoiling" and parent educator, Nancy Samalin, M.S., will address key parenting issues including: positive discipline, setting limits, diminishing conflict, handling sibling rivalry and encouraging cooperation. Recognized as a parenting expert by national media, Nancy has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, 20/20, CNN, and Dateline NBC. She is also a former contributing editor to Parents Magazine.
Don't Call Me Shy
Many children have times when they act shy or reserved. Join nurse, health educator, author and shyness expert Laurie Adelman as she shares her shyness coaching skills - and discover the Don't Call Me Shy method, a technique that changes a child's thoughts about him/herself from "I can't because I'm shy" to " I CAN be social if I try". Learn how to speak to your child in a way that encourages the development of his/her social skills.
Healthy Meals For Kids
Great tasting easy meals can be a challenge. Hear Stacey Antine, Executive Director of Healthbarn USA tell us simple steps to create nutritious meals for the whole family. Get tips, recipes and learn which brands to purchase to make you life easier. A sample tasting will be provided.
Babies and Pets
Hear a Chilton Memorial Hospital pediatrician and an area veterinary physician give helpful hints in this new adjustment period.

Childhood Sleep Disorders
4 out of 10 children don't get enough sleep and more than 2 million children nationwide suffer from sleep disorders, according to the National Institutes of Health. Many of these children are often misdiagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Could this be happening to your child? Sleep is essential to school performance for learning and memory consolidation. Come learn about how to help your child get a better nights rest. At this lecture, we will be taking an in-depth look at pediatric sleep disorders, their consequences and their treatment. A brief consultation and child sleep health screening will be done at the end of the lecture. Screening space is limited, so register early.
Safe Sitter
This medically accurate, hands-on class is designed for boys and girls 11 - 13 years old. Some topics include, Injury management, first aid, basic child care skills, safety for the sitter, when and how to call for emergency help and much more!
Free Child Car Seat Safety Check
Sponsored by Chilton Memorial Hospital, State Farm Insurance, and BabiesRUs.
Local police officers certified as Child Passenger Safety Technicians will show you how to properly install and use your child car seat. A Chilton Memorial Hospital Registered Nurse will be available to answer questions on child safety issues.
