Chilton Memorial’s MICU is staffed by certified paramedics, medical professionals trained in pre-hospital care, who have completed two years of extensive classroom instruction and rigorous clinical internship. Paramedics must complete 48 hours of continuing education every two years. Paramedics often administer the “first-line” of life-saving treatment. They are authorized by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services to perform many medical procedures and administer certain medications prior to contacting an emergency medicine physician. These include starting intravenous lines, placing endotracheal tubes, and performing cardiac defibrillation. Paramedics act in the field as the “eyes and hands” of the Emergency Department physician, who directs them in further treatment. For information on CPR and EMT training click here. |
