Emergency Medical Technician
The field of prehospital emergency medical care is an evolving profession in which the reality of life and death is confronted at a moment's notice. EMS has developed from the days when the local funeral home and other services served as the ambulance provider to a far more sophisticated system today. EMT-Basics work side by side with other healthcare professionals to help deliver professional prehospital emergency medical care. The EMT-Basic course is designed to help the student gain the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to be a competent, productive, and valuable member of the emergency medical services team. The EMT-Basic course is the first step to becoming a paramedic.

The 120-hour program is divided into 7 core modules including, airway management, patient assessment, vital signs, medical emergencies, trauma and scene management. Once students master the material presented in a module, they are permitted to move to the next module. At the completion of the program, students are eligible for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians written examination, which is the certifying exam for the State of New Jersey. After achieving a passing score on the exam, students are certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) for a period of three years. EMT-Bs must obtain 48 hours of continuing education (CEUs) during this certification period in order to recertify.

Prerequisites: Students must be at least 16 years of age at the beginning of the program. A professional rescuer CPR card is also required.
