COPD Support Group
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease affects 24 million Americans. It is actually a group of diseases that restrict airflow into and out of the lungs, and includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic asthma. According to the director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Chilton Memorial, David Gourley, COPD symptoms include swollen, inflamed airways, damaged air sacs in the lungs and excess mucous.

"Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that 58 percent of the Americans suffering from COPD are not even aware they have it," Gourley said. "The disease is usually caused by cigarette smoking, but early discovery of a breathing problem and appropriate treatment can prevent COPD from progressing to the point that it limits the activities of those suffering from it."

Participants at support group sessions learn about new medication to treat COPD, and how to deal with anxiety when feeling breathless, how to breathe more efficiently while using less energy, and how to protect themselves from infections.

The LUNG TALK support group meets the third Friday of each month from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. in Chilton Memorial's board room at 97 West Parkway in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. Attendance is free.
