Chilton Memorial Hospital Offers Minimally Invasive Alternative to Lifestyle-Restricting Menstrual Periods

Released: 07/19/2010

(Pompton Plains, NJ) - Excessive menstrual bleeding is a debilitating condition that affects one in five women ages 35 to 49 years old in the United States. A safe and effective procedure is available at Chilton Memorial Hospital.

The NovaSure endometrial ablation system, a 90-second, outpatient treatment for women, is designed to reduce or eliminate excessive bleeding by safely removing the endometrial lining of the uterus. The minimally invasive procedure, developed and manufactured by Hologic, Inc., requires no incisions.

Benefits of the NovaSure procedure include:

  • Dramatic improvement in menstrual bleeding
  • Improved quality of life
  • More energy
  • Improvement of PMS symptoms
  • Fast recovery time: patients usually return to work the next day

Affecting approximately 10 million women in the United States, excessive menstrual bleeding is one of the most common afflictions in contemporary gynecology. Women with the condition face a number of debilitating physical and social effects, from fatigue and anemia to embarrassing accidents and restricted physical and sexual activity. They endure compromised sex lives, ruined vacation plans and even miss work.

"Despite the intolerable effects of excessive menstrual bleeding, only one in five sufferers seek treatment," said Chilton OB/GYN Les Burns, MD. "When they do, hormone therapy and hysterectomy are commonly offered, despite their documented limitations and potential dangerous side effects. Hormonal therapy is effective less than 50 percent of the time and may not be an option for women who smoke or have a history of blood clots, diabetes, cardiovascular disease or breast cancer. Hysterectomy is a major surgical procedure with serious potential risks and long-term side effects, and is often a more invasive and drastic solution."

Clinical trials demonstrate that 93 percent of NovaSure patients are satisfied with their results and 97 percent said they would recommend NovaSure to a friend. NovaSure is appropriate only for pre-menopausal women with excessive menstrual bleeding due to benign causes who have completed childbearing. NovaSure does not replace birth control for the prevention of pregnancy.
